YMCA Institute of Engineering
Faridabad, India

Image26.jpg The complex is dominated by the central group of academic buildings, flanked on one side by the group of student hostels, and on the other by the staff residences. A central pedestrian spine connects all the residential buildings to the academic complex cutting across pleasant landscaped gardens without crossing any of the vehicular roads. The central complex which houses a variety of activities was conceived as a kind of pin-wheel structure allowing the expansion of different wings in due course depending on future needs.
Image22.jpg The training programme, based on a sandwich system, involved the students spending half their time in classrooms and laboratories and the other half on actual shop floor training in the workshops. This meant frequent movement for the students between the different elements within the central complex, and as the buildings were not air-conditioned it was important that exposure to the elements be restricted only to the act of coming from the hostels to the central complex itself.

Image27.jpg Within the complex all the different elements were connected by a system of covered corridors and verandahs which even bridged across the road to link with the auditorium, the conference complex and the sports pavilion adjoining the playing fields.

The four hostel blocks together defined a strong enclosed space that formed a major focal point for students on the campus.
