Oberoi Wildflower Hall Hotel
Shimla, India

Located 25 kilometers outside Shimla near a village called Mashobra, the Wildflower Hall Hotel is situated on a ridge enjoying spectacular views of the surroundings snow capped peaks of the Himalayas.

Occupying a site, which once housed the Commander in Chief of the British army's residence, and subsequently was converted into a hotel after Partition, the attempt was to create a building, that reflected some of the character and splendor of the Raj period. The original building burnt down some years ago and all that remained were some cottages along the hillside, set amongst the dense pine forest.

The new hotel intends to provide year round accommodation and recreational facilities and is designed to have 91 rooms, all enjoying unique views. In order to minimize the overall impact of the building mass, and to keep it within the tree line, a major portion of the hotels amenities are planned to step down the hillside towards the rear. Also located within the hotel grounds is a tennis court, which can be converted into an ice skating rink during the winter.

Within the 25-acre site there are extensive hillside walks through the pine forest. The design of the building emulates the profile of those in the British Raj era visible around Shimla. This has also dictated the choice of materials; the stone clad base for the building and the slate topped high pitched roofs with its many separate gabled peaks & spires.
