The opportunity to refine the integration of internal and external space in a meaningful composition came with the design of the Mughal Hotel Hotel at Agra. Here again Fatehpur Sikri and the Moghal and Rajasthani forts served as models and sources of insipiration. A substantial site of 13 acres provided the basis for a garden concept.

The court itself was rougly divided into three parts, the largest of which contained the swimming pool. All three spaces were formally conceived with organised planters, steps, and paved walk-ways providing not only a pleasant aspect from the guest rooms but also serving as semi-shaded enclosed spaces where guests could relax. The formal organisation of these areas culminated in the central Mughal Garden that defined the axis of the Taj Mahal and with its fountains, cascades, and monumental row of trees led under a bridge connecting the internal courts with the external garden surrounding the hotel.
